Ireland’s First Fully-Funded Gambling Addiction Treatment Programme Launched

Ireland has taken a significant step in addressing gambling addiction with the launch of the country’s first fully-funded treatment programme. Open to everyone, including members of the Brazilian community in Ireland, this initiative aims to provide structured and accessible support to those struggling with gambling addiction.

The ‘Gambling and Gaming Specific Outpatient Programme’ will be run by the Rutland Centre in Knocklyon, Co. Dublin, in collaboration with the HSE. This programme is designed to offer targeted help to individuals affected by problem gambling, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to vital support services.

The Growing Need for Gambling Addiction Treatment

According to the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), approximately 1 in 30 adults in Ireland suffers from problem gambling—around 130,000 people—while a further 279,000 show moderate signs of gambling-related issues. With gambling addiction on the rise, especially due to the accessibility of online betting, this new programme aims to provide effective treatment for those in need.

What the Programme Offers

The new treatment programme consists of a ten-week structured group designed for adults over 18 who are struggling with gambling addiction. The plan includes:

  • Twice-weekly group therapy sessions to provide peer support and shared experiences.
  • Weekly online psychoeducational seminars covering addiction awareness, emotional regulation, and relapse prevention.
  • One-on-one counselling sessions every two weeks, offering personalized support tailored to individual needs.
  • A strong aftercare system through the Rutland Centre’s Continuing Care programme, ensuring long-term assistance for those who complete the programme.

‘A Significant Step Forward’

The Rutland Centre described the initiative as a major advancement in tackling gambling addiction in Ireland, making professional treatment available without financial constraints.

Emma Kavanagh, Head of Clinical Services at the Rutland Centre, emphasized the urgency of addressing gambling addiction, particularly among young men, stating: “Mobile phones and online gambling apps have made it easier than ever to place bets at any time, anywhere. Our new programme is designed to help individuals regain control, whether their addiction is linked to sports betting, online casinos, or other gambling activities.”

She also highlighted that problem gambling doesn’t just affect individuals—it impacts families, too. “This programme provides structured support to help rebuild relationships and restore stability for those affected.”

Open to All, Including the Brazilian Community in Ireland

The programme welcomes anyone in need, including the vibrant Brazilian community in Ireland, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds can access the necessary resources to overcome gambling addiction.
