Portugal Joins Ireland and Italy as Top Destinations for Brazilians, But Entry Denials Are On the Rise

As more Brazilians look to Europe for new opportunities and a better quality of life, countries like Ireland, Italy, and increasingly, Portugal, have become popular choices. However, new data shows a worrying trend for those targeting Portugal: a significant increase in entry denials.

According to recent statistics from Schengen Visa Info, there has been an astonishing +700% spike in entry denials for Brazilian travelers arriving in Portugal. In the first three months of 2024 alone, 1,751 Brazilians were refused entry—compared to just 211 during the same period in 2023.

Why the sudden rise?

Portuguese authorities cite several reasons, including:

  • Insufficient documentation to justify the purpose of the trip
  • Lack of proof of accommodation
  • Inadequate financial means for the duration of stay

While Portugal has long been a welcoming destination—partly due to shared language and deep cultural ties with Brazil—this recent uptick in denied entries has raised concerns among both travelers and migration experts.

A broader migration trend

Despite the stricter border controls, Portugal remains a top destination for Brazilians, alongside Ireland and Italy, which continue to attract thousands of newcomers with job opportunities, welcoming communities, and favorable residency pathways.

What Brazilian travelers should know

To avoid complications, experts advise Brazilian nationals heading to Portugal (or any Schengen country) to:

  • Carry proper documentation including proof of accommodation and return flight
  • Be ready to show financial means (cash, bank statements, etc.)
  • Clearly state the purpose of their visit

With proper preparation, Brazilians can still successfully settle in or explore Europe. And while Portugal is tightening its border checks, it continues to be one of the most popular and accessible gateways to life in the EU—especially for those who share historical and linguistic connections.
