Man Deported from Brazil Facing Possible Child Murder Charges

A significant turn has unfolded in the investigation into the disappearance and death of three-year-old Daniel Aruebose, whose remains were found buried in north County Dublin more than four years after he was last seen alive. On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Ciaran Dirrane, a man in his 20s, was arrested at Dublin Airport on suspicion of murder following his deportation from Brazil.

Financial Oversight and Discovery

The case was initially triggered in August 2025 by a “spot check” conducted by the Department of Social Protection. Officials discovered that social welfare funds, specifically child benefit payments, were being claimed for Daniel despite a lack of evidence that the child had been seen by any state agency for several years.

This financial discrepancy led Tusla to alert Gardaí, who then visited the family’s apartment at The Gallery in Donabate. While the parents initially claimed Daniel was living elsewhere, they eventually admitted he had died in 2021. This led to a major search of marshy ground on the Portrane Road, where Daniel’s skeletal remains were discovered on September 17, 2025.

Deception and Family Estrangement

Investigations have exposed a pattern of misinformation used to hide the child’s death. In the days before an attempt was made to travel abroad, Daniel’s mother, Maria Aruebose, reportedly told Tusla that her son was living with relatives.

Gardaí have since established that the wider family was entirely estranged from the parents. Crucially, it is believed these relatives were not even aware that Daniel existed, ensuring that no family members would ever seek to visit the child or report him missing.

Digital Evidence and Homicide Probe

A central element of the current homicide investigation is the analysis of a phone seized by Gardaí. Digital forensics revealed an “online history” featuring specific, disturbing searches made around the time Daniel is believed to have died in July 2021. Investigators believe these records contradict the parents’ claims that the child died of natural causes in his sleep and was buried “in a panic.”

Nationality and Background

  • Maria Aruebose: The child’s mother is an Irish national; reporting indicates she is originally from Africa. She remained in Dublin after Daniel’s death until her recent arrest and release pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
  • Ciaran Dirrane: The child’s father is from the Aran Islands, Co. Galway. Following Daniel’s death, he moved to Brazil and established a new life there before being returned to Ireland via administrative deportation.

Institutional Failures

Daniel’s death has highlighted severe gaps in child protection. He had been in foster care for over a year after birth—where he was described as a “happy, clever child”—but was returned to his parents in 2020 after they were allocated a council apartment. Because no further concerns were raised, he remained “invisible” to the state for four years.

Gardaí continue to prepare a file for the DPP, while both parents remain at liberty but under investigation.
