Dalkey is a very rich village in the suburb of Dublin, known for being home to many famous people like Bono and the Edge (U2 members), Van Morrison and Enya. In recent months, the village has welcomed actor Matt Damon and his family, who are spending time in Ireland due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to celebrities, Dalkey has many other attractions, such as castles, a 10th century church and a main street full of restaurants and pubs. The place is a popular weekend destination and can easily be visited from Dublin. Just board the DART or Dublin Bus from the center.
Dalkey Castle
For a long time, Dalkey was the main port in eastern Ireland, as large ships could not reach Dublin due to the water level.
The items were unloaded and stored in fortified buildings. This castle, formerly called Goat’s Castle, was the only one left, being transformed into a museum open to the public.
All visits are guided, lasting about 40 minutes, where you can learn a little about life during the Middle Ages. Visits are open from 10 am to 5 pm during the week (closing on Tuesdays), and from 11 am to 5 pm on weekends. The ticket costs € 10.50, with a discount for families.
During the Christmas season, they offer medieval-themed tours, showing some Christmas traditions that were popular during the Dark Ages.
Dalkey Island
Located about 300 meters from the coast, this is the island that gave the village its name. At the time of the Vikings, it was called Dalk eyja, which means “thorn island”, due to its shape.
The island has no residents, but there are indications that it was inhabited in the Neolithic period. It was used as a Viking base and later as a place of pilgrimage for the pagans. Today, the island is an animal sanctuary, being a habitat for migratory birds and other species.
To reach the island, it is possible to cross the boat from Coliemore Harbor. The service is offered by Ken, a local resident, and costs 10 euros per person. The service is available 7 days a week, from 10 am to 6 pm.
Biddy’s Cottage
In this chalet you can spend time with Brighid ‘Biddy’ McLaughlin, a professional storyteller who is a true encyclopedia of Irish folklore. In addition to the stories, the hostess serves tea, cookies and other delicacies made on site. You need to make a reservation by contacting us via Facebook or by email.
Killiney Hill Park
Located in the south of Dalkey, this park has several trails with spectacular views. On a clear day, it is possible to have a panoramic view of Dublin. The park also has monuments such as the Obelisk, also known as the “Hat of the Witch”.
Dalkey Book Festival
Cultural festival that takes place annually in the month of June. The event lasts 4 days and is held in different locations in the village. Despite the focus on literature, the festival celebrates all forms of art and offers lectures on cinema, theater and music, with famous artists and writers among the guests.

Dalkey é uma vila riquíssima no subúrbio de Dublin, conhecida por ser o lar de muitos famosos como Bono e the Edge (integrantes do U2), Van Morrison e Enya. Nos últimos meses, a vila acolheu o ator Matt Damon e sua família, que estão passando um tempo na Irlanda devido à pandemia do coronavírus.
Além das celebridades, Dalkey tem muitas outras atrações, como castelos, uma igreja do século 10 e uma rua principal cheia de restaurantes e pubs. O local é um destino popular de fim de semana, podendo ser facilmente visitado a partir de Dublin. É só embarcar no DART ou no Dublin Bus partindo do centro.
Dalkey Castle
Durante muito tempo, Dalkey foi o principal porto do leste da Irlanda, já que grandes navios não podiam chegar até Dublin, devido ao nível da água.
Os itens eram descarregados e armazenados em construções fortificadas. Este castelo, antigamente chamado de Goat’s Castle, foi o único que restou, sendo transformado em um museu aberto ao público.
Todas as visitas são guiadas, durando cerca de 40 minutos, onde é possível conhecer um pouco da vida durante a Idade Média. As visitas funcionam das 10h às 17h durante a semana (fechando às terças), e das 11h às 17h nos fins de semana. O ingresso custa €10,50, com desconto para famílias.
Durante a época de Natal, oferecem tours com temática medieval, mostrando algumas tradições natalinas que eram populares durante a Idade das Trevas.
Dalkey Island
Situada a cerca de 300 metros da costa, esta é a ilha que deu nome à vila. Na época dos Vikings, era chamada de Dalk eyja, que significa “ilha do espinho”, devido ao seu formato.
A ilha não tem moradores, mas há indícios de que foi habitada ainda no período Neolítico. Foi usada como base Viking e, mais tarde, como local de peregrinação pelos pagãos. Hoje, a ilha é um santuário animal, sendo habitat para aves migratórias e outras espécies.
Para chegar a ilha, é possível fazer a travessia de barco a partir do Coliemore Harbour. O serviço é oferecido pelo Ken, um morador local, e custa 10 euros por pessoa. O serviço está disponível 7 dias por semana, das 10h às 18h.
