University College Dublin is offering a doctoral scholarship in the field of communication. The Ad Astra PhD Scholarship lasts up to four years and entitles you to remuneration of 18 thousand euros per year (about 110 thousand reais, tax free), plus €4,000 per year to be spent on research.
The program is aimed at investigating social phenomena through online data collection and analysis. Students in the fields of communication, sociology, politics, information systems or computer science are welcome.
As research deals with large amounts of data, one of the requirements is to have knowledge or interest in computational models. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge in areas such as data mining, machine learning, statistics and data processing. Candidates with experience in programming languages such as R, Python, Ruby or JavaScript will also be preferred.
In addition to preparing a doctoral thesis, the fellow will have to participate in conferences and seminars to publicize the results of his study, in addition to presenting the progress of the work regularly for the scholarship to be renewed.
To apply, you must have a master’s degree in any of the research areas, in addition to a certificate of proficiency in English. Exceptionally in 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the university is accepting the Duolingo English Test (DET) as an alternative to other tests, such as TOEFL and IELTS. DET can be done online and costs $49. Results come out in 2 days.
Applications must be made through the UCD website, for a fee of €50. Candidates can be from any country, inside and outside the European Union.
