Explorium: Dublin’s Interactive Science Hub

Nestled in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains, Explorium is Ireland’s National Science and Sport Centre. It’s a massive, 110,000-square-foot facility in Sandyford dedicated to hands-on learning and discovery, blending science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM), and sport in one immersive experience.

Unlike a traditional museum, Explorium is built on the principle of “learning by doing.” Visitors are encouraged to touch, test, and interact with over 300 exhibits. It’s split into distinct zones, primarily the Junior Explorium for younger children and the main Science and Sport section for older kids (ages 8+) and adults.

What to Expect: Events & Exhibits

Explorium isn’t just a static collection of exhibits; it’s a dynamic space with live shows and special activities.

  • Key Attractions: Popular exhibits include the electrifying Tesla Lightning Show, a mind-bending Gravity Room, and a chance to lie on a Bed of Nails. You can also test your agility in the climbing and caving sections, or experience virtual reality.
  • Live Shows: The centre regularly runs live science demonstrations and shows, such as watching Robo-Dogs perform tricks, which are typically included with your admission.
  • Private Events: Explorium is a very popular venue for birthday parties, offering packages that combine exhibit access with a private party room. They also host corporate events and team-building days.
  • Seasonal Events: Keep an eye on their website for special seasonal activities, particularly around midterm breaks, Halloween, and Christmas.

Prices & Tickets

It’s highly recommended to book tickets online in advance, as walk-in availability is not guaranteed. Pricing is generally separated by area.

  • Science & Activities (Ages 8+):
    • General Admission: Approximately €30 per person.
    • This ticket typically grants access to the main science exhibits, including shows like the Tesla coil.
  • Junior Explorium (Ages 7 and under):
    • Child (2-7): Approximately €15
    • Adult: Approximately €7.50
    • Toddler (1-2): A small fee usually applies.
    • Babies (Under 1): Often free.
  • A La Carte Activities: Some activities, like Urban Climb, Caving, and VR Experiences, may need to be booked and paid for separately.

(Note: Prices are approximate and subject to change. Always check the official website for the most current pricing and package deals.)

Opening Times

Opening hours differ between the two main sections, so it’s important to check which one you’re visiting.

  • Junior Explorium (Ages 7 & under):
    • Generally open 7 days a week, from around 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
  • Science & Activities (Ages 8+):
    • Also open 7 days a week, typically from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

(Hours can be subject to change, especially during holidays or for private events. Always verify on the official booking calendar before your visit.)

How to Get There

Explorium is located at Blackglen Road, Sandyford, Dublin 18, D18 N1F2. It is accessible by both car and public transport.

  • By Car: The centre is easily reachable from the M50 motorway (take Exit 13). A major benefit for drivers is the ample free on-site parking.
  • By Public Transport (Luas): The closest Luas stop is Balally on the Green Line. From the stop, it is a 20-25 minute uphill walk.
  • By Public Transport (Bus): Several bus routes stop nearby. The 114 and 44B are excellent options that stop very close to the entrance. Other routes like the 16, 74, and S8 also have stops within walking distance.

Alternatives in Dublin

For many years, Dublin had several interactive science and children’s museums. However, Explorium is now the primary destination of its kind currently operating in the city.

It’s important to note that its main historical alternatives are now closed:

  • Science Gallery Dublin: Located at Trinity College, this popular gallery closed permanently in 2024.
  • Imaginosity: The Dublin Children’s Museum, which was also located in Sandyford, has been closed since March 2020 and has not reopened.

For those looking for other educational or science-related days out, you might consider:

  • The Natural History Museum (“Dead Zoo”): A fantastic, traditional museum. Please Note: The main building on Merrion Street is closed for major refurbishment as of 2025. A smaller, temporary exhibit called the “Dead Zoo Lab” is open at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks.
  • National Botanic Gardens: Located in Glasnevin, this is a beautiful and scientific day out, perfect for exploring plant life from around the world in stunning Victorian glasshouses.
  • Dublin Zoo: Located in the Phoenix Park, the zoo is a leading centre for animal conservation and education.
